【関係副詞】１

　関係詞には、「関係代名詞」だけでなく、「関係副詞」もあります。


　　　　1. Where is he from ?  （疑問副詞）

　　　　2. This is the place where he was born twenty years ago.　（関係副詞）


　もともと疑問副詞であったwhereがその機能を「拡張」して関係副詞のwhereとなりました。

　1→2への拡張の特徴を以下説明します。


　　　  疑問副詞（where）→関係副詞（where）への拡張の特徴

　　　・位置がかわった：　文頭→先行詞（名詞）の後　＊先行詞＝the place

　　　・機能がかわった：　疑問詞→形容詞（節） ＊形容詞＝先行詞を説明

　　　・意味がかわった：　どこ→意味なし（訳なし）　


　要は、疑問詞から「形容詞」へと機能が拡張したのです。「形容詞」という機能を新たに獲得したのです。

　ところで、「関係副詞」という名称は、「関係＝接続詞」と「副詞」の役割をもつことにちなんで名づけられていますが、重要なことは、先行詞という名詞を説明する「形容詞」節として機能しているということです。

   2. This is the place where he was born twenty years ago.　（関係副詞）
　　　
      = This is the place, and he was born there twenty years ago.　（接続詞＋代名詞）


   2. This is the place ←(where he was born twenty years ago).  （形容詞の機能）


　そしてポイントは、関係副詞とは、疑問副詞という「具体」から、関係代名詞という「抽象」へと変化したものであるということです。


　　　疑問副詞　「具体」　→　関係副詞　「抽象」


　さて、関係副詞には、where だけでなく、when, why, how もあります。基本的な例文のみ以下あげます。


　　 ・ He was born on the day when the war broke out.

    ・ I want to know the reason (why) he was absent from school yesterday.

    ・ This is (the way) how he solved the problem.

      =This is the way (how) he solved the problem.
