【関係副詞】２

　関係副詞にも that があります。


    ・ This is the place (that) he was born twenty years ago. (=where)

    ・ He was born on the day (that) the war broke out.   (=when)

    ・ I want to know the reason (that) he was absent from school.  (=why)

    ・ This is the way (that) he solved the problem. (=how)


　関係副詞の that は省略されることが多いそうです。

　さて、この関係副詞 that は、指示代名詞 that の機能が「拡張」したものです


　　　　指示代名詞 that 「具体」　→　関係副詞 that 「抽象」

　
　　　　「具体」：　「こっちの世界」

　　　　　　　　　　現実世界（リアルな空間）

　　　　　　　　　　目で見る世界

                   → this, it, that, they, these, those　（指示代名詞）


   　　「抽象」：　「あっちの世界」

　　　　　　　　　　　想像世界（バーチャルな空間）

　　　　　　　　　　　頭で考える世界

　　　　　　　　　　　→ that 　（関係副詞、関係代名詞）


　もともと単なる「あれ」という具体的なものを指し示す that が、遠くの「頭で考える世界」（「抽象」）の事柄を差し示すことができるという、抽象と非常にいい相性をもっていたため、どんどんその機能を「拡張」させることができました。

　次に、「that節」というテーマを考えていきます。
